Answers:

1. The UK is a country in north-western Europe. It is bordered to the south by the English Channel; to the east by the North Sea; to the west by the Irish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.


2. The official name of the UK is the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".
Four countries make up the UK. They are:

England: Its capital is London.

Scotland: Its capital is Edinburgh.
·
Wales: Its capital is Cardiff.
·
Northern Ireland: Its capital is Belfast.

· England, Scotland and Wales together form
Great Britain.

4. Before 1922 the UK included Ireland in the definition, but when the Irish Free State ceased to be part of the Union the title changed to include 'Northern Ireland'.
