The name Iran is a cognate of Aryan, and means "Land of the Aryans".
Iran is officially known as the Islamic Republic of Iran. However, until 1935, it was known as Persia. Iran is a country in Central Euroasia, located on the northeastern shore of the Persian Gulf and the southern shore of the Caspian Sea. Both "Persia" and "Iran" are used interchangeably in cultural contexts, but Iran is the only name used in political contexts. The official religion is Shia Islam and Persiab is the official language.
Iran is 18th largest country in the world in terms of area (at 1,648,195 km²), and has a population of over seventy million. It is a country that has a very strategic geographical position because of its central location in Euroasia: It borders on the north by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan; it neighbors Kazakhastan and Russia on the north. Also, Iran is bordered on the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan, on the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman , and on the west by Turkey and Iraq.
The capital city of Iran is Tehran. It is the biggest and largest city in the country, and the most important one. In fact, Tehran is the political, cultural, commercial, and industrial heart of the nation.
Iran is a regional power, and holds an important position in international energy security and world economy as a result of its large reserves of petroleum and natural gas. Iran is a very rich country, but unfortunately many of its citizens are rather poor. A minority controls most of the money that comes into the country, and the distribution of it is not really fair. Its political system is based on a Constitution that was written in 1979 , which comprises several intricately connected governing bodies, and the highest state authority is the Supreme Leader.
Iran has been the home of many of the world's oldest major civilizations (dating back more than 5000 years). For example, the first Iranian dynasty formed during the Elamitge kingdomin 2800 BC. The Iranian post-Islamic dynasties and empires expanded the Persian Language and culture throughout the Iranina plateau. Early Iranian dynasties which re-asserted Iranian independence included the Tahirids, Saffarids and Samanids (among others). The blossoming of Persian literature, philosophy, medicien, asronomy, mathematics and art became major elements of Muslim civilization and started with the Saffarids and Samanids.

As we can see, this country has a long and rich history. Yet, what have seen in the news in the last week or so has shown us a country that seems to have a lot of political issues. But why? What’s the matter? Is the strict control that the government has on people that has led to the turmoil that we have watched on the news? Is it the oppression on their women? Is it the corruption of the politicians? If you want to know more about Iran we strongly recommend to watch Persepolis (it is a cartoon, but it is not ANY cartoon), and to visit http://www.aawsat.com/english/ and http://www.iran-daily.com/Part of this text has been adapted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran
